Intel Announce Landmark Agreement
Sun Microsystems,
Inc. and Intel Corporation today announced a broad strategic alliance
centered on Intel's endorsement of the Solaris(tm) Operating System (OS) and
Sun's commitment to deliver a comprehensive family of enterprise and
telecommunications servers and workstations based on Intel¨ Xeon¨
processors. The scope of the agreement spans Solaris, Java(tm) and
NetBeans(tm) software and Intel Xeon microprocessors, as well as other Intel
and Sun enterprise-class technologies. The alliance also includes joint
engineering, design and marketing efforts.
As part of today's
announcement, Intel is embracing Solaris as a mainstream OS and the
enterprise class, mission critical UNIX¨ OS for Intel Xeon processor-based
servers. Intel also endorses Sun's Solaris, Java and NetBeans products and
will actively support the OpenSolaris(tm) and open Java communities from
which they continue to evolve.
Sun is committed
to leading on performance and energy efficiency in its server product line.
After a comprehensive evaluation of industry platforms solutions, Sun has
decided to complement its current offerings with platforms based on Intel
Architecture optimized for Solaris beginning in the first half of 2007. Sun
believes IntelÕs model of alternating new microarchitectures with new
process technologies on an annual basis will offer outstanding building
blocks for SunÕs customers.
Sun plans to
deliver a comprehensive family of Intel-based systems with uni-, dual- and
multi-processor based servers and workstations supporting Solaris, Windows
and Linux.Ê Intel and Sun will also collaborate around greater than four
processor scale-up systems optimized for the Solaris OS.
As part of this
alliance, Intel has signed a Solaris OEM agreement enabling Intel to
distribute and support the Solaris OS to its customers as market
opportunities may arise and consistent with Intel's product strategies.
Intel and Sun will strongly encourage independent software vendors (ISVs)
and system providers to expand their offerings for Solaris on Intel-based
systems, and Intel will support Sun in its efforts to optimize applications
for Solaris on Intel Xeon processor based systems.
ITU and GSMA join
forces to boost mobile access in developing countries
ITU and the GSM
Association agreed today to strengthen cooperation towards improved access
to mobile phone services aimed especially at bridging the digital divide in
least developed and developing countries. A Memorandum of Understanding was
concluded by the Secretary-General of ITU, Dr Hamadoun TourŽ, and Mr Tom
Phillips, Chief Government & Regulatory Affairs officer of the GSMA, during
the meeting of the Global Symposium for Regulators currently taking place in
Dubai. The agreement focuses on fostering the development of information and
communication technology (ICT) infrastructure in least developed and
developing countries. It stems from the overall objective of implementing
the action lines of the World Summit on the Information Society, Geneva 2003
and Tunis 2005, and the World Telecommunication Development Conference, Doha
2006. I am very pleased to announce this agreement with the GSM Association
and I look forward to the collaboration in developing wireless access to
connect the unconnected," said Secretary-General Hamadoun TourŽ after the
signing ceremony. "ITU is the leading United Nations agency specializing in
ICT-related issues and represents a global forum for its 191 Member States
and over 600 Sector members. GSMA represents a strong voice of the mobile
industry and they are making real contributions towards increasing worldwide
mobile penetration, including access in rural and underserved areas of the
world."Commenting on the partnership, Tom Phillips of the GSMA, said,
"Mobile operators have long known the value of government policies that
support private investment. Through this new relationship, operators hope to
create a dialogue that will cut through todayÕs hurdles and bottlenecks,
creating new investment opportunities and integrating our membersÕ
commercial agenda closely with that of government."
The GSM
Association is a partner of ITUs Connect the World initiative, a global
multi-stakeholder effort that encourages new projects and partnerships to
bridge the digital divide.
